Your team isn't out of ideas. They're out of headspace.
Hot take: your team isn't out of ideas.
They're out of headspace.
I spent nearly 20 years in advertising operations. Smart teams, real talent, good instincts. Ideas that could have genuinely changed how we worked. But the machine always needed feeding first.
There was always a fire drill. Always the next urgent thing. The work of keeping operations running consumed every hour that could have gone toward making them better. And the people who could see exactly what needed fixing? They were too buried to fix it.
I read something this week that crystallized it. Serval founder Jake Stauch stopped asking enterprise buyers "what's your biggest pain point?" because he kept getting shrugs. Not because they didn't know, but because they'd adapted around every problem so many times they couldn't see it anymore.
So he switched to: "If you could hire someone tomorrow to take work off your plate, what would you hand them first?"
That question unlocked everything.
Because people always know what's on that list. The work they never get to. The fix they've been meaning to build. The process duct-taped together for two years. It lives rent-free in their head every single day.
No AI tool is going to surface that for you. That knowledge lives in the human beings on your team, in their experience, their frustration, their institutional memory. The ones who've watched the same problem recur for years and have quietly been building the solution in their heads the whole time.
The organizations that learn to unlock that, that protect thinking time the same way they protect delivery timelines, don't need to wonder why innovation isn't happening.
They already know who's been carrying the answer.
I've spent 20 years being the person with that list. I'm building my own answer to that question right now. Stay tuned.
